The Rheingau is the epitome of relaxed lifestyle, enjoyment and culture. It presents itself with individual diversity: the vineyards of the Rheingau winegrowers nestle against the foothills of the Taunus Mountains with their forests, ranging from gently undulating to breathtakingly steep. Only here does Germany’s largest river flow westwards. Historic, small and dreamy villages like Kiedrich enchant with their own charm – the legendary Drosselgasse in Rüdesheim, the elegant banks of the Rhine in Eltville. You are sure to find your own private favourite spot here. Perhaps at the ‘most beautiful wine view’ in Lorch with a dreamlike view over the Rhine valley? Today, as for centuries, the fillets of this landscape are reserved for Riesling and produce unique wines full of character and richness. In addition, enclaves such as the red wine town of Assmannshausen on the Rhine have established themselves, where Pinot Noir red wines grow that need fear no international comparison. International classics such as Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc or other ‘Rheingau exotics’ also have a place here. It is gratifying to see that the producers are very concerned about environmentally friendly and resource-saving cultivation and vinification – and so more and more ecological methods are being used.
Wiesbaden and the Rheingau are not only perfect neighbours, sometimes they seem almost symbiotic. Like here in the southwest of the city, where Wiesbaden’s Frauenstein district feels like a winegrowing village. Frauenstein is Wiesbaden’s gateway to the Rheingau: everything here is under the sign of wine; in the direction of Schierstein, a European vineyard has even been planted, where various grape varieties from all over Europe grow.
Wine in Frauenstein only faces competition from cherries once a year. When the numerous cherry trees in the district are in pink and white blossom, it is not only the people of Wiesbaden who are attracted to the district.
“The longest wine bar in the world” is in Wiesbaden: For ten days from 8 to 17 August 2025, the Schlossplatz, the square in front of the Marktkirche and the Dern’sche Gelände will once again be transformed into a dream destination for friends of fine Rheingau wines.
Over 100 wine stands and three stages.
Toasting with a sparkling wine in a convivial atmosphere, enjoying a familiar or newly discovered favourite wine with friends, a small treat and plenty of good humour and good music: the 46th Rheingau Wine Week, which takes place on the Schlossplatz, in front of the Marktkirche and on the Dern’sche grounds, is eagerly awaited by wine lovers from home and abroad.
A total of over 100 winegrowers from Wiesbaden and the Rheingau region present their products, while more than 20 other stands offer gastronomic specialities such as barbecue specialities and sweet treats such as crêpes. The purchase of the wine festival glass has also long been a cherished custom. The coveted wine festival glass is available at the wine stands during the wine week and at the Wiesbaden Tourist Information Centre at Marktplatz 1.
Well-known bands from various genres will perform on the three stages on the Schlossplatz, in front of the Marktkirche and on the Dern’schen grounds to entertain visitors musically.
Wiesbaden has always been a city of pleasure. Wonderfully situated in the foothills of the Taunus and on the Rhine, the warm springs were initially a centre of attraction. At this settlement ‘aquae mattiacorum’ an economic and cultural centre developed: the capital of Hesse.
The Wiesbaden urbanity is characterised by spacious buildings from the Wilhelminian period, nestled in a lot of greenery – this is what makes Wiesbaden so unique, even within the attractive Rhine-Main region. The facades of the individually designed townhouses can be admired along every street and the next park is never far away.
The best way to get around is on foot! Because if you go on a pleasure trip in Wiesbaden, you can gain a whole range of different impressions for all the senses on foot. Each district has its own character and combines traditional and modern shops, gastronomy and cultural offerings in its own unique way. We present a small part of the culinary diversity here – to the right and left of the selected places valuable further gems can be discovered.
A must-see in Wiesbaden is, of course, the ensemble that locals affectionately call ‘Bowling Green’: a spacious green area framed by the neoclassical Kurhaus, theatre, casino and Grand Hotel, directly on the famous Wilhelmstraße – modern lifestyle against a historic backdrop. Here you can start enjoying yourself straight away.
